The DIY route is the Meridian Transfer Station on W Franklin Rd, or the Ada County Landfill at Hidden Hollow in the Boise foothills. Both take tires for a per-tire fee, and both take large metal items and cardboard at no charge. That works fine if you've got a few tires, a truck, and time to haul and unload them yourself.

Where it stops making sense to DIY is once you're past a handful of tires, the rims are still attached, or they're buried behind other stuff in a garage. That's the point where paying for pickup saves more time than it costs.
